London City Airport

London City Airport is situated in the old Docklands area in London E16 and close to Canary Wharf, the new ‘city’ of London.

It was opened in 1987 to provide a convenient departure point for the city financiers’ business travel to Europe.

It is situated six miles to the east of the city in the former docklands area in London(E16), which closed many years ago.

It is ideally for located for the forthcoming London Olympics in 2012.

Road access is from The A13 leaving London, turn right at Prince Regent Lane and follow the signs. Also from London take the A1203 the Highway, continue through the Limehouse Link tunnel and follow the signs. This route is usually the quickest. Coming the other way, leave the M25 at junction 30 (A13) and follow the signs. From the North Circular Road (A406) take its continuation, the A1020,turn right at Gallions Roundabout and follow the signs.

Taxis

From the City Airport will cost around £17-£20 to the City and up to £30 to central London. Trips to west London will cost around £40. The Taxi Rank is directly opposite the terminal. To the City it takes about 20 minutes and 30-40 minutes to other parts of central London, depending on traffic.

Computer Cab has a desk inside the terminal Tel +44 (0) 207 511 2796

Private Hire cars as always must be pre-booked.

The Docklands Light Railway (DLR) is the rail connection to the City Airport (journey time approximately 20 Minutes) The DLR runs eastwards from Tower Gateway Station, The Minories EC3 or Bank Station, Bank Junction (EC3) There is no Tube line that links to the City Airport, but you can take the Jubilee Line to Canning town Station and thereafter the DLR.

The Silverlink Metro Rail service (Tel +44 (0) 207 1234) links from Canning Town and Silvertown Stations. Trains are every 30 Minutes to Richmond via Hampstead /Acton/ Kew. There are no connections to any National Rail Mainline Stations on this service. This service travels through north London.

Buses are also located opposite the terminal just in front of the Taxi Rank.

There is a shuttle bus to Liverpool Street.

Local Buses are No 473 to Stratford (E15) and No 474 to Canning Town (E16).

As I say four people in a Taxi will pay roughly the same fare as they would pay on a bus. If your are travelling alone then the bus will be cheaper.

Car Hire

Remember that in London and all of the UK the steering wheel is on the right side of the car and we drive on the opposite side of the road from most other countries and it takes some getting used to. But a good driver who pays attention should not find it too difficult and there are car rental agencies for all the airports. You can use the form on the right to find the best rates.
